Nigeria used-car import rules (2026)
| Rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Maximum age | 12 years from year of manufacture — in 2026, only vehicles from 2014 onward may be cleared. |
| Steering | Left-hand drive (LHD) only — all Chinese vehicles are LHD, so they qualify. |
| Fuel types | Petrol, diesel, hybrid and EV all permitted. |
| Discharge ports | Lagos — Apapa and Tin Can Island. |
⚠️ Vehicles close to the 12-year cut-off can be assessed at a “risk age” valuation (values pushed up ~20–30%), raising duty. Newer stock clears more smoothly. Rules are enforced by the Nigeria Customs Service and can change — confirm the current cut-off before you buy.
How much does it cost to clear a car in Nigeria?
Nigeria reformed its vehicle levies effective 1 July 2026, cutting the total tax burden. As of the 2026 fiscal policy, used-car charges are approximately:
- Import duty: 20% of CIF value
- NAC (auto council) levy: 5% — cut from 15% in the 2026 reform
- Green tax: 0–4% by engine size (0% under 2,000cc, EVs and buses; up to 4% for 4,000cc+)
- Surcharge: 7% (applied to the duty amount)
- ETLS + CISS/FOB levies: ~0.5% + ~1–4%
- VAT: 7.5% on the combined base
Net effect: the combined duty-and-levy baseline dropped from roughly 35% toward ~25% of CIF for smaller-engine cars — meaningfully cheaper to land than before mid-2026.

Which of our cars can be imported to Nigeria?
Because Nigeria’s limit is a generous 12 years, almost all of our current stock qualifies — anything manufactured 2014 or later. That includes budget EVs like the BYD Seagull, family sedans, and SUVs.
A handful of older units (2013 and earlier) do not qualify for Nigeria — ask us and we’ll filter our stock to only cars that can legally enter your port.

FAQ
What year cars can I import into Nigeria in 2026?
Vehicles manufactured 2014 or later (12-year limit from year of manufacture). Older cars are not cleared.
How much is customs duty on a used car in Nigeria?
After the July 2026 reform: ~20% import duty + 5% NAC levy + 7.5% VAT + smaller green tax/surcharge/ETLS levies. The combined baseline is roughly 25% of CIF for smaller engines — down from ~35% before the reform. Larger engines pay more (green tax).
Are Chinese cars left-hand drive? Yes — all Chinese-market vehicles are LHD, which Nigeria requires.
Can I import electric cars (EVs) from China to Nigeria? Yes. EVs are permitted and pay 0% green tax; models like the BYD Seagull are popular for low running cost.
Do you sell to dealers in bulk? Yes — Hanvia works with importers and dealers. Tell us your volume for wholesale pricing.
Disclaimer: Import rules and duty rates are set by the Nigeria Customs Service and change frequently. The figures above reflect the 2026 fiscal policy (effective 1 July 2026) and are indicative only — always confirm the current age limit and duty with Nigeria Customs or your licensed clearing agent before purchase.
