A CIF Djibouti price covers four things: the car, export clearance in China, sea freight to the Port of Djibouti, and marine insurance for that voyage. Everything after the ship arrives is the buyer’s: port handling in Djibouti, transit to Ethiopia by rail or road, Ethiopian customs duty and taxes, and the clearing agent. When you compare suppliers, a CIF Djibouti quote and a FOB China quote are not the same kind of number. The FOB quote looks cheaper because the sea voyage hasn’t been added yet.

What CIF means
CIF stands for Cost, Insurance and Freight. It is one of the standard Incoterms, the international rules that define who pays for what in a shipment. “CIF Djibouti” means the seller pays to deliver the goods to the named port, Djibouti, including insurance.
| Cost item | CIF Djibouti | FOB China | EXW China |
|---|---|---|---|
| The car | Seller | Seller | Seller |
| Transport to the Chinese port | Seller | Seller | Buyer |
| Chinese export clearance | Seller | Seller | Buyer |
| Loading on the ship | Seller | Seller | Buyer |
| Sea freight to Djibouti | Seller | Buyer | Buyer |
| Marine insurance | Seller | Buyer | Buyer |
| Djibouti port charges and handling | Buyer | Buyer | Buyer |
| Transit Djibouti to Ethiopia | Buyer | Buyer | Buyer |
| Ethiopian duty, taxes, clearing | Buyer | Buyer | Buyer |
We quote EXW, FCA and FOB as standard. For Ethiopia, we also quote CIF Djibouti, because a single delivered-to-port number is easier for buyers to compare and budget.
One detail most buyers miss: where the risk passes
Under CIF, the risk passes to the buyer when the car is loaded on the ship in China, not when it arrives in Djibouti. That is why the seller has to buy insurance for the voyage: if something happens at sea, you claim on that insurance policy.
Two practical consequences:
- Ask for the insurance certificate with your shipping documents. Under CIF you are entitled to it, and it is what you claim against.
- CIF insurance under the Incoterms rules is minimum cover unless you agree otherwise. If you want broader cover, ask before shipment. It’s usually a small cost compared with the value of the car.
What the buyer pays after Djibouti
These are the costs a CIF Djibouti price does not include. Ask your clearing agent for current figures, because they depend on the car, the route and the timing.
- Djibouti port charges. Handling at the port of discharge, and storage if the car waits.
- Transit to Ethiopia. Ethiopia is landlocked, and most of its trade moves through Djibouti. Vehicles go inland by the Addis Ababa–Djibouti railway or by truck. Don’t plan to drive an EV from the port: the distance is far longer than any of these cars’ real-world range, and charging along the route is unreliable.
- Ethiopian customs duty and taxes. For fully assembled electric vehicles, customs duty has been reported at 15%, with VAT, excise and surtax waived. Some 2024 reports cite an increase to 20%. Confirm the current rate with a licensed clearing agent before you finalise a price for your customer. Our Ethiopia EV import guide covers the rules.
- Clearing agent fees, and registration once the car is in Ethiopia.
We don’t publish figures for these items because they change and we don’t control them. Your clearing agent can quote them against the specific car.
Documents you receive with a CIF shipment
For a CIF Djibouti shipment, the core documents are:
- Commercial invoice with the VIN, model, model year and price.
- Bill of lading, the shipping line’s document of title for the cargo.
- Insurance certificate for the sea voyage.
- Packing list.
Ask your clearing agent which other documents Ethiopian customs needs for your specific import, and send us the list before shipment. We’ll confirm what we can provide for each unit.
How to compare two quotes
A common comparison mistake is setting a FOB China price next to a CIF Djibouti price: the FOB number looks lower only because the voyage isn’t in it yet. Before you compare prices, put every quote on the same basis:
- Check the Incoterm. EXW, FOB and CIF are three different price points for the same car. Convert them all to CIF Djibouti, or ask each supplier to quote CIF Djibouti directly.
- Check the exact car. Same name doesn’t mean same car: battery capacity, motor output and trim all change the price. Our BYD China vs export names guide explains why “Atto 3” or “Sealion” alone isn’t enough, and the Atto 2 versions show how one name can hide three cars.
- Check the VIN and condition. A quote without a VIN is a quote for a car that may not exist yet. Ask for the VIN, photos or a live video, and a condition report. See what a proper condition report covers.
- Check the timeline. A car already landed in Djibouti and a car still to be sourced in China have very different delivery dates, even at the same CIF price.
- Check who you’re paying. Pay a company account that matches the company on the invoice. Our guides to choosing a Chinese car exporter and how the supply chain works cover the checks.
Stock already in Djibouti: CIF with the voyage already done
For most China-to-Ethiopia orders, the sea voyage is the longest and least predictable part. Cars wait for container space, wait for the sailing, then sail for weeks. See how many cars fit in a container for why a single car often waits for a full load, and shipping routes to African ports for the routing.
We hold BYD electric SUVs that have already landed in Djibouti, still quoted CIF Djibouti:
- BYD Atto 3 (China name Yuan Plus), in 430 km and 510 km versions. See Atto 3 430 km vs 510 km.
- BYD Sealion 05 EV 430 km. See Sealion 05 EV vs Atto 3.
For these units, what is left is the Djibouti port side, the inland leg and Ethiopian clearance. For other models, such as the Dolphin and Seagull or the Atto 2, we quote CIF Djibouti on units shipped from China. Browse current stock.
Ordering steps
- Tell us the model, version and quantity. We confirm availability and send the VIN, photos and condition details.
- Agree the CIF Djibouti price and payment terms in writing.
- Deposit to reserve the unit. For shipments from China, container space is allocated in the order deposits arrive.
- Export clearance and shipping (for China stock), or release documents (for Djibouti stock).
- Your clearing agent takes over in Djibouti for transit and Ethiopian clearance.

FAQ
What does CIF Djibouti include?
The car, export clearance in China, sea freight to the Port of Djibouti, and marine insurance for the voyage. Port charges in Djibouti, transit to Ethiopia, Ethiopian duty and taxes, and clearing fees are paid by the buyer.
What is the difference between CIF and FOB?
FOB China ends when the car is loaded on the ship in China; the buyer pays sea freight and insurance. CIF Djibouti adds sea freight and insurance to Djibouti, so the seller pays for the voyage.
Under CIF, who is responsible if the car is damaged at sea?
The risk passes to the buyer when the car is loaded in China. That is why CIF includes insurance: the buyer claims against the insurance policy the seller arranged. Ask for the insurance certificate.
Does CIF Djibouti include Ethiopian import duty?
No. Ethiopian customs duty and taxes are paid by the buyer. Confirm the current rate for electric vehicles with a licensed clearing agent.
How does the car get from Djibouti to Addis Ababa?
By the Addis Ababa–Djibouti railway or by truck, arranged by the buyer or their clearing agent. Don’t drive an electric car up from the port.
Do you have cars already in Djibouti?
Yes. BYD Atto 3 (430 km and 510 km) and Sealion 05 EV units are already landed in Djibouti, quoted CIF Djibouti. Ask us on WhatsApp for current availability.
