Import Cars from China to Peru: The 2-Year Rule and What Actually Qualifies (2026)

Vehicle prepared for export from China to Peru

Peru allows used-vehicle imports, but Supreme Decree 005-2020-MTC caps them at two years from the model year. In 2026 that means, in practice, only 2024-model-year or newer units clear customs — which is a narrow enough window that most exporters quoting “used cars for Peru” are actually describing a new-vehicle ordering process, not a used-car sale. Right now 11 of our 78 in-stock vehicles fall inside that window: 6 fully electric, 5 hybrid, zero petrol.

Peru’s used-car import rule, in plain terms

Rule Requirement
Legal basis Supreme Decree 005-2020-MTC (Ministerio de Transportes y Comunicaciones)
Maximum age 2 years from the model year at time of import
Steering Left-hand drive (LHD) only — matches all Chinese domestic stock
Diesel Used diesel vehicles barred in categories L, M and N, except M3 and N3 (buses and heavy trucks)
New vehicles No age restriction — new units of any year can be imported and registered

The two-year line is counted from the model year, not the exact build date, so a car built in late 2024 and one built in early 2025 can land on the same side of the rule even though they are months apart in age. This is the same mechanism used in Bolivia next door — see our Bolivia import guide — though the two countries’ enforcement details differ enough that they should not be treated as one rule.

What this means commercially: a used-car sourcing pitch for Peru is honest only if the vehicles actually being offered are inside that window. Most used stock — anything from a standard 8-10-year-old used-export lot — simply does not qualify. The workable path for Peru is either (1) a genuinely recent-model used unit, or (2) ordering new.

The pattern worth noting: the qualifying set is entirely electric and hybrid, zero petrol. That is not a curated selection for this page — it is simply what our recent-arrival stock looks like right now, because the newest units we bring in skew toward EV and hybrid as that segment of the Chinese domestic market has grown. If a Peru-bound order needs to be petrol for a specific reason (fuel availability, service network, buyer preference), it will most likely need to be a new-vehicle order rather than sourced from used stock.

Verify the model, not just the badge

One trap that applies as much in Peru as anywhere: the same nameplate can cover mechanically different cars depending on model year and trim. The Geely Coolray sold locally in Peru today, for instance, is one of three distinct versions of that car — see our breakdown of Coolray, Coolray Lite and New Coolray for the Peru/Bolivia/Chile market for how to tell them apart before you quote a price against a listing. The same discipline applies to any Chinese model: confirm engine, generation and export-market naming before assuming two listings describe the same car — see Chinese domestic model names vs export names.

Shipping route: Callao is the door

Almost all of this traffic clears through the Port of Callao, Peru’s main container and RoRo gateway, adjoining Lima. That concentration is useful commercially: a single clearing agent relationship at Callao covers the large majority of Peru-bound orders, rather than needing separate arrangements per region. Inland buyers in Cusco, Arequipa or Puno add a domestic trucking leg from Callao — worth budgeting into a landed-cost estimate rather than assuming port cost is the final number.

Buying from a China-based exporter: what to check

Peru’s used-vehicle sourcing has to run through a supplier who can document the model year and condition accurately, since a mismatch on either can mean the car is refused at customs rather than merely mis-priced. Before committing:

  • Ask for the VIN and build date documentation, not just a stated “year.”
  • Confirm condition disclosure — flood, fire and major-accident history should be stated up front, not discovered after payment.
  • Check the supplier is an actual exporter, not a reseller quoting on stock they do not hold — ask for their yard address, VIN-level stock list and a live video walkaround before wiring anything.
  • Get inspection documentation before shipping — see what a proper vehicle inspection report should cover.

FAQ

Can I import a used car from China to Peru?

Yes, but only if it is within roughly two years of its model year under Supreme Decree 005-2020-MTC. Cars older than that are not permitted for used import, regardless of condition.

Is there an age limit on new vehicles imported to Peru?

No. New vehicles of any model year can be imported and registered without an age restriction.

Are diesel vehicles allowed?

Used diesel vehicles are barred in most passenger and light-commercial categories (L, M, N), with an exception for heavy categories M3 and N3 (buses, heavy trucks).

Do Chinese cars need conversion for Peru?

No. Peru drives on the right and requires left-hand-drive vehicles, which is what all Chinese domestic-market stock already is.

How many of your current vehicles qualify for Peru right now?

Eleven, as of this page’s publication — six fully electric, five hybrid. That number changes as stock turns over, so confirm current availability before ordering. Ask us on WhatsApp for the current list.

Which port does the vehicle arrive at?

The Port of Callao, next to Lima, handles the large majority of vehicle imports into Peru. Buyers outside Lima should budget for a domestic trucking leg from Callao to their region.
